MU Block and Bridle Club select Doc Smith
as Mizzou Livestock Person of the Year

COLUMBIA, MO – Wayne "Doc" Smith, who has devoted his life to the Missouri cattle industry and to the youth interested in that industry, was named Livestock Person of the Year by the Mizzou Block and Bridle Club.
Smith was presented the award at the University of Missouri Animal Science Departmental banquet on April 23rd.
“Doc Smith is a worthy recipient of this award since he has devoted much of his life to serving the youth of Missouri,” said Jill Nelson, Block and Bridle member. As a Field man for the Missouri Angus Association, Doc became a prominent figure in Missouri Angus Circles. He has devoted 24 years of extraordinary service to advancing the Angus breed and the American Angus Association.
Smith was raised on a farm in Sullivan County Missouri. He got his start in the Angus business in 1947 as a FFA project. In 1951, Doc received a degree in Agriculture from the University of Missouri. In 1952, he gained both a Masters degree in Education and a wife, Evelyn. Evelyn is the daughter of a local farmer and Angus breeder. She and Doc now live on the farm where she was raised. Doc completed his veterinary degree in 1956 from MU and practiced veterinary medicine in Winigan, Mo., until 1979.
In 1980, Doc became a field man for the Missouri Angus Association, which started his career impacting youth, who showed livestock in Missouri.
Doc Smith has been an enthusiastic ambassador for Missouri Angus breeders, and said his most rewarding experiences have been with the youth. Although Doc and Evelyn have no children or their own, over the past 25 years, most juniors have come to be one of “Doc’s kids.” No one has committed more time and energy to the youth of this state than Doc. He has bought semen, donated semen, organized events and helped with livestock shows.
However, it was Doc’s personal attention, which had an impact on the lives of youth. Doc always provided words of encouragement and moral support to youth, which gave them confidence and assurance in being successful. Doc has always believed in the juniors and in his own way made them believe in themselves.
The Livestock Person of the Year award is presented to an individual who has improved, promoted, and/or dedicated their time and efforts to the Missouri Livestock Industry. This is a very prestigious award and a photo of the each recipient is hung on the wall in the Sale Arena at Trowbridge Livestock Arena.
